Lit Terms - An Out of Print collaboration with Mike Joyce

We're big fans of literary terms and devices. Not only are they the root mechanics to a great love of ours (writing and storytelling), the terms as words alone are super cool: malapropism, portmanteau, zeugma to name a few. Sadly, these terms don't get the broad attention we feel they deserve. We would like to change that.

Introducing our Lit Terms collection, an Out of Print collaboration with graphic designer, Mike Joyce. Mike is well-known for his acclaimed swissted project that "redesigned vintage punk, hardcore, new wave, and indie rock show flyers into international typographic style posters." We saw his work and thought it was just the style we wanted for some of our favorite terms.

Here's Mike describing his thought process:

"This new line of t-shirts for Out of Print Clothing is inspired by my love of Swiss graphic design—more specifically the International Typographic Style. I always appreciated how the Swiss modernists purged extraneous decoration to create clear communication and thought that design philosophy would pair well with various literary devices. Many of the original Swiss Style posters from the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s were abstract representations of their subject matter. Using shape, structure, scale, color, and typography, the design would evoke a certain feeling and specific message to it’s audience. These four designs based off of literary terms follow that same philosophy."

Literary terms have been hidden away in textbooks and on school room chalk boards long enough. The time is now for them to step out into the light and onto your shirt.
